KINSHASA: After casting vision for this project last fall we launched a property search and in January 2007 a great piece of property was purchased on the outskirts of the capital city, Kinshasa.
That is a great miracle story if you haven’t read it yet! It is somewhere on this blog ….

30 beautiful acres!

Today we have a growing base of support and are deep into the planning stages of the village. Because it is on a hillside there is much engineering work to be done for terracing the property. The general design and layout of the village and house plans are all coming together.
Two weeks ago we began fencing the perimeter of the property. This is more to mark the boundaries than it is to keep people out so we have gone with putting in steel posts every 10 meters and when rainy season starts in September we will be planting Eucalyptus trees between the posts. It will be a nice, natural boundary to the village property.

Meet Poto, one of our hired workers for Elikia. He wears many hats for us including driver, mechanic, and welder!

Meet Tchombe, another hired worker for Elikia who is digging our 100 postholes and cementing the poles in place.

WATER PROJECT: Two organizations have been contacted regarding our water project. There is a spring at the bottom of the hill that we have negotiated the rights to and will pipe up the water to an existing reservoir on our property. From there it will be pumped up to two – yet to be built – water towers in the village providing running water for the homes of Elikia!
A bonus for us is an opportunity to give the surrounding villagers their own water spout at the top of the hill! When I trekked down to the water source there were many people climbing back up with huge buckets of water on their heads and shoulders. I can’t imagine what a thrill it will be for them to not have to make that trek anymore!
I can’t wait to see that day!!

Reservoir at the base of our property

Our spring water!

We are hoping to begin this water project in October 2007. The Canadian Embassy in Kinshasa also has grant money available for projects like Elikia so we are preparing a proposal for them to review in October.

We hope to begin terracing and construction in January 2008.

CANADA: As one of my fellow workers took sick I was recalled to Canada for 3 months to do fundraising for Elikia. I enjoy the challenge and have been meeting people as varied as they are numerous! The drawings and village layout are being done from here, as well I have been speaking at businesses, churches, and individual homes and foundations.

We are in the midst of putting together an amazing event of dinner, music, and silent auction at a fabulous venue in Vancouver! This is quite exciting and have just welcomed a wonderful woman to the Elikia team, Celine, to help bring this event to life! She has a lot of fundraising experience to bring to the team and we are very happy to have her onboard!

WELCOME CELINE

The event date – mid September – and location will be confirmed soon so check back for more information next week!

If you are interested in helping on the Elikia Canada Team please email: info@elikiavillage.org

If you are new to this site and want more information please email: info@elikiavillage.org

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Not a moment was lost as we careened around the corner on our way to our meeting in Chilliwack. Bugs hitting my face at 110km p/h stung just enough to let me know that I would need to wash before our meeting. The bike was a Yamaha 1100 and I was a passenger. What beautiful cool air! Nothing like the country I had left behind with it’s 99% humidity! The next 3 months would be filled with meetings and latte’s, bikerides, and just sitting around sharing what is happening with the work in the Congo. It will be a time to see God move in ways I can only imagine at this point, but am excited to be here and watch (and work) with eyes wide open!

It’s been just over 3 weeks now and I am settling in the this culture once again. With the ease of running out to pick something up from the corner store (without it taking hours!), to walking around barefoot at home without dust blackening my feet…. ahhh, the small comforts are nice.

I am eating a lot of fresh salads and enjoy drinking water straight from the tap!
The other day a mosquito landed on my arm and I thought “hah, you can’t hurt me here,” as this is a no malaria zone!

Well, my schedule is beginning to fill up and I see that my “To do” list is getting longer each day instead of shorter … but I know that all will work out and that I am meant to be here in this season.

PROJECT UPDATE …
THE PERIMETER FENCE IS BEING BUILT THIS WEEK AND I AM WORKING HERE TO FINISH UP THE DESIGN LAYOUT OF THE VILLAGE. MANY PEOPLE HAVE STEPPED UP TO HELP IN THE PROJECT SO FAR AND I WANT TO SAY A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!

OUR TWO CORPORATE SPONSORS … HOMELIFE BENCHMARK REALTY IN CLOVERDALE AND SEEVIRTUAL360.COM WE SAY AGAIN … THANK YOU FOR PARTNERING IN THIS WORK AND CARING FOR THE FORGOTTEN IN THE CONGO.
